ABOUT THE ROLE

The founding Head of Public Relations will play a vital role in the development and implementation of an innovative public relations strategy and program to advance the effectiveness and vision of the B.A.A. They seek a hands-on and high-level leader to ensure they capably and consistently communicate their purpose, events, and philosophy to their audience and communities.

You will partner and collaborate closely with media, external stakeholders and each of their internal teams to achieve success. The Head of Public Relations will report directly to the B.A.A.’s Chief Executive Officer and be part of the organization’s senior leadership team. The position will have the opportunity to build a best-in-class Public Relations strategy and function for global impact.

RESPONSIBILITIES

PR Strategy Management

  • Create and manage the B.A.A.’s PR strategy, program, and story – proactively creating a productive image for the B.A.A., its work and its vision.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., media and industry contacts, local, state, and federal government and public officials/public affairs, community partners, B.A.A Marketing and Communications), collaborating appropriately to advance our strategy and promote the B.A.A.
  • Promote the B.A.A. within their industry.
  • Develop and lead campaigns (such as how the B.A.A. is leading in terms of industry innovation, in the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging space, etc.), external efforts, and outreach. Measure and report on success of efforts, recommending changes to approach based on data insights.
  • Work closely with CEO to develop and deliver the organization’s external messages.
  • Work closely with our Marketing and Communications team members to coordinate and deliver content effectively across multiple channels. Provide guidance to collaborators.
  • Prepare content for various channels and events, such as key talking points, Board materials.
  • Serve as PR lead and spokesperson during B.A.A. races and industry events, press forums, and as needed.

Community Liaison

  • Serve as a “bridge” to their various communities and audiences. Enhance the B.A.A. presence and brand in the local market.
  • Leverage local and regional contacts to ensure B.A.A. work is highlighted throughout the year, and in alignment with their strategy. Continuously build and strengthen these relationships, managing their public affairs and media relations.
  • Collaborate with local cities and towns, and their respective agencies, organization, and contacts. Consistently provide outward communications and engagement with these groups to support B.A.A.’s strategy and position on running throughout the year.

 Crisis Communications

  • Serve as crisis communications leader and point person.
  • Proactively plan for possible scenarios and ensure all involved understand what to do when predicted scenarios do occur.
  • Anticipate and be available (seven days a week, if required) for critical PR needs.

  • Experience directing the media/media-related activities to elevate an organization’s profile, including both traditional and social media. The ideal candidate will have an established network within Boston’s media industry.
  • Experience in crisis communications situations.
  • Proven ability to serve as an effective organizational spokesperson, produce excellent forms of written communication, and manage media relations.
  • Knowledge of the organization.

WORK EXPECTATIONS AT B.A.A

The B.A.A. is a hands-on team and seek employees who are passionate about their work and service to the community. The Head of Public Relations role is a 40 hours/week, exempt position. This role will have an MA-based hybrid work arrangement. Beginning February 1, 2023, the B.A.A. will have a seasonal hybrid work model in which different months of the year require 2-3 days/week in the office while other months require 0-3 days/week. The B.A.A. has two office spaces–one in downtown Boston and one in Hopkinton, MA. The Head of Public Relations will be expected to travel to the Hopkinton office on an occasional basis, though they will primarily be based in the Boston office.

COVID-19 Guidelines

B.A.A. continues to adapt to safety protocols related to COVID-19 as they understand them. All candidates must comply with B.A.A.’s current COVID-19 Guidelines, including B.A.A.’s vaccination requirement. All employees must receive at least the first dose of the vaccination no later than one week after their start date, and must be fully vaccinated no later than 4 weeks later.  For the purpose of this policy, individuals are considered fully vaccinated for COVID-19 two weeks after they have received the second dose in a two-dose series (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) or two weeks after they have received a single-dose vaccine (Johnson and Johnson/Janssen).

The B.A.A. requires all employees to receive the COVID vaccine. For the safety of the community, B.A.A. employees are expected to obtain COVID tests if they have symptoms or have traveled by plane. Quarantining may be required after air travel.

OVERVIEW:

The Senior Director Talent Administration will report to the National Director of Human Resources. In partnership with other HR leadership, this person will be responsible for designing and implementing Year Up human resources strategies, and has primary responsibility for key areas, such as: HR policy development/implementation/interpretation; employment processing; compensation; health and welfare benefits; records management; safety and health; employee relations and conflict resolution; and employment related compliance to support the organization’s rapid growth and expansion across the country. From defining systems and processes to strategizing, this person will communicate with key stakeholders about Year Up’s total compensation and employee relations strategies, goals, and overall vision. The incumbent will be the primary HR partner for the HRIS team in regard to ADP HRIS-related matters and manage our HR Help function (knowledge management and HR Help team capabilities). The Senior Director Talent Administration will also manage a growing team of HR Generalists and HR Business Partners.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Personnel Policies and Risk Management

  • Accountable for standardization, development, communication, and management of personnel policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to ensure personnel policies and procedures advance the organization’s mission, integrate Year Up’s core values, increase organizational effectiveness, and sustain an equitable and inclusive workplace
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the laws and policies that affect HR processes, programs and/or strategies; and stay on top of industry trends and employment legislation, including applicable local, state, and federal laws
  • Provide guidance to others to ensure that all policies, laws, and regulations are followed appropriately

Compensation and Benefits

  • Effectively partner with organizational leaders to manage, consult and resolve compensation issues through the use of creative and strategic guidance
  • Research best practices and trends, and perform deep analysis on effectiveness and competiveness of existing compensation and benefits programs –presenting findings and alternative solutions that are cost effective and consistent with Year Up’s core values, mission and compensation philosophy
  • Stay abreast of and ensure compliance with evolving Federal and state compensation-related legislation
  • Work closely with benefits brokers to design market-competitive benefits programs, manage annual benefit renewal process, and evaluate effectiveness of programs
  • Ensure effective management of Leave of Absences, including tracking time, coordination of benefits, communication with the employee, managers, and HR Information Systems team
  • Oversee communication strategy for specific benefits (open enrollment, retirement, professional development, paid time off) and develop employee education programs to ensure employees understand benefits, their value, and available resources

Employee Relations

  • Oversee the HR Business Partner team, collaborating with HRBPs to establish scalable tools and practices that empower their organizational training, performance, engagement, and development programs
  • Lead and develop a team of high-performing individuals, as the HRBP arm is grown
  • Act as an employee advocate and protects the interest of employees in accordance with the Year Up’s Human Resources policies and appropriate governmental laws and regulations
  • Use data and apply analytics skills to formulate people insights and recommendations; diagnose trends and root causes influencing employee relations to drive the development and execution of quality solutions
  • Serve as the chief architect and implementer of YU policies, practices and approaches for resolving employee conflicts/disputes/etc.
  • Partner with HR Leads to establish and track HR metrics that reflect a fact-based, comprehensive method for valuing the contributions

Systems and Processes

  • Responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of all HR personnel administrative matters, guided by the implementation of HR procedures and policies as directed by the Chief Operating Officer
  • Ensure that HR database accurately reflects the staff records, and conforms to organizational policies regarding confidentiality, access, and document retention
  • Partner with the HRIS team and other National Human Resource sub-teams to ensure HRIS improvements are regularly occurring, and HR analytics are readily available, as needed by the business

Provide Strategic HR Partnership

  • Actively participate on the HR leadership team to develop the strategic HR business plan and talent priorities, and to assist with increasing HR’s overall effectiveness
  • Participate in the annual budget process through developing and managing the budget for benefits
  • Oversees and is responsible for projects and priorities within sub-team purview
  • Serve as a valued advisor and partner by providing influential counsel and guidance to business leaders across the organization

Team Management & Support

  • Lead, mentor, and develop National Talent Administration, including: support the professional development of team members; manage the hiring of new team members; and identify future talent acquisition needs
  • Lead team to ensure right level of partnership with sites across the country around Talent Administration matters
  • Create and communicate Talent Administration goals to the organization, while holding staff accountable to meeting measurable targets and goals
  • Manage National Talent Administration budget, including negotiating fees with partners, reviewing contracts and identifying cost saving opportunities

Site Team/Learning Community Member

  • Serve as a coach /mentor for a small number of current students
  • Join and sometimes facilitate weekly group sessions with students
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 6+ years’ experience in HR and employee relations or compensation & benefits fields strongly preferred
  • Experience and commitment to diversity and inclusion with the skillsets needed to build, manage, and engage others in policies and procedures that ensure equitable business practices, and which foster a diverse, inclusive, and culturally-competent environment
  • Demonstrated success in creating strategic direction/plans and proven ability to drive and sustain business improvement and results; strong business acumen required
  • Experience in coaching/consulting senior leaders within organizations
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with an ability to inspire others, garner buy in, and build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
  • A passion for working with urban young adults, and unshakable belief in their potential and a strong commitment to the mission of Year Up
  • Understanding of the Opportunity Divide and its drivers

Background 
The Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) is a national non-profit organization founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School Professor Michael Porter to promote economic development in America’s inner cities through private sector engagement that leads to job, income and wealth creation for local residents. ICIC brings together business and civic leaders to drive innovation and action, transform thinking, and accelerate inner city business growth. At ICIC, you will work with talented, creative and committed professionals in a collaborative culture dedicated to excellence and innovation.

 

Position Summary
ICIC is seeking an experienced professional who will report directly to the CEO and work closely with the management team to attract new partnerships, cultivate and strengthen external relationships, manage a business development portfolio, and create and execute a business development plan.

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Provide strategic support to the CEO for the design and continuous refinement of both annual and long-term development plans, comprised of diverse revenue sources, including foundation grants, major gifts, corporate sponsorship, and annual and multi-year donations. 
  • Oversee local and national prospect management from identification to stewardship; personally build appropriate relationships with individuals and institutions (foundations, corporations, anchors, etc.), that result in meaningful levels of support for existing programs, new initiatives, and innovation efforts. 
  • Actively research and identify new grant opportunities that meet the funding needs of the organization; manage the grant application process for all of ICIC’s proposals and reports annually. 
  • Establish clear, realistic, transparent and accountable fundraising success metrics; monitor performance and provide timely and accurate projections for budgetary and financial reports to the CEO and Board of Directors on all fundraising activities.
  • Gain first-hand knowledge of ICIC’s research and advisory content and programmatic work in order to understand and articulate the activities, stories, and impact of ICIC’s work. 
  • Lead the creation and execution of marketing strategies and materials to support development efforts. 
  • Select and manage opportunities for the CEO and senior leadership to participate as thought leaders in media (publications/interviews), events, conference presentations and similar settings. 
  • Serve as a key member of the senior executive team, contributing to overall organizational goals and representing the priorities of the development function.
  • Continually evaluate, refine and/or redesign fundraising systems, practices and policies in order to support fundraising efforts; maintain high functioning infrastructure for pipeline development and tracking, grant reporting, list management, and overall donor outreach and engagement. 
  • Hire, train and coach staff to ensure talents are matched to roles and assignments in ways that set the team up for success and maximize high-performance; introduce and maintain development and fundraising best practices through ongoing professional development for team members. 
  • Collaborate across ICIC programs, convenings and initiatives to support ICIC’s strategic goals and general operations.

Qualifications Desired
The successful candidate is a self-motivated, dynamic, collaborative leader who is also a strong project manager.   This person must be comfortable interacting with people at all levels of an organization and influencing decisions at a high level.

  • Significant experience leading successful business development or fundraising functions including individual and institutional strategies.
  • Experience raising funds for a complex multi-program organization is a plus.
  • Understanding of economic development and small business issues.
  • Experience addressing multiple constituents’ needs across projects and/or programs at the same time.
  • Proven success in building and maintaining client relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and think strategically while executing tactically.
  • Ability to manage and execute projects and multiple tasks and flexibility with changing priorities.
  • Ability to innovate, develop new approaches, and drive creativity and inventiveness within the organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Ability to work well with a team as well as individually.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning, organizational and self-management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. An advanced degree in business, marketing, or similar field preferred.
