The high level:

The Revenue Accounting Manager is a new role best suited for an experienced accounting professional who is detail-oriented, hands-on, results-driven with proven communication skills and a strong work ethic to work in a challenging, fast-paced, nonprofit environment. This person is responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of all revenue, including, but not limited to: temporarily restricted, government, and unrestricted grants as well as deferred revenue, all private donations, other grant awards, and fee for service (FFS) from school partners. This person is also responsible for ensuring revenue is posted to the GL accurately and documented within the Reading Partners CRM (Salesforce) in full accordance with GAAP. The Revenue Accounting Manager will report to the Controller.

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure accurate and timely revenue recognition
    • Coordinate the daily operations related to revenue recognition and establish regular and effective communication channels with designated program and development colleagues.
    • Manage the weekly processing of cash receipts and recording of revenue.
    • Prepare detailed revenue analysis, reconciliations and budget-to-actual variance reports.
    • Ensure all revenue and related accounts are posted to the GL accurately and in accordance with GAAP.
    • Perform monthly close tasks associated with revenue including the preparation of various reconciliations, deferred revenue roll forward, monthly revenue journal entries and monthly revenue related analysis.
    • Monitor accounts receivable and ensure timely processing in system to ensure all documentation is in compliance with company policy and all rules/ regulations set forth by our contracts.
    • Assist in preparation of monthly management reports.
    • Maintain and analyze accounting records.
    • Assist with the preparation of accounting schedules, reports and financial statements monthly and as requested by senior leadership.
    • Manage all private and foundation grants and ensure they’re booked according to the conditions stipulated in the contract.
    • Ensures all monthly invoices are submitted to various grants, contracts and governmental agencies as well as all reimbursement invoices.
    • Track all in-kind gifts.
    • Assist in ensuring a constant state of annual fiscal and funder audit readiness through clean and accurate coding, tagging and reporting.
    • Ensure direct expenses tagged to municipal grants/ contracts are allowable and compliant under contract/ grant provision.
  • Partner with Finance/ Accounting colleagues and other business partners
    • Ensure GL records and internal CRM database (Salesforce) are congruent.
    • Work closely with external audit team regarding all quarterly review and annual audit requirements.
    • As needed, may help with bookkeeping operations and assist in the day-to-day delivery of the organization’s main accounting policies, procedures and contracts.
  • Process improvement
    • Regularly audit all current practices to assess their effectiveness and efficiency.
    • Revise current practices to ensure best in class service and performance as it pertains to revenue activities and reporting.
    • Ensure all internal policies and procedures are practical and realistic. Ensure best practices are documented and in full effect at Reading Partners.
    • Assist in process improvements to further streamline revenue tasks and shorten revenue close calendar.
  • Other duties as needed

POSITION OVERVIEW:  

Year Up seeks an experienced and dynamic Sales Director, Western Region to lead its Corporate Engagement and Internships initiatives for several national accounts. Reporting to the National Director of Corporate Engagement, this individual will lead the effort to expand and broaden our relationships and internship placements in select accounts on a national basis. The Sales Director, Western Region will work with major Fortune 500 corporations in need of entry-level talent to provide trained, high-potential urban young adults with high-quality internships, and will ensure a program of support and professional development for these young adults on their internships. The ideal candidate should desire to leverage his or her demonstrated experience in sales, strategy, and for-profit management practices within our mission-driven social enterprise.

 

To be successful in this role, you will develop and implement a strategic internship sales plan to achieve revenue targets, manage client accounts and relationships, and design robust engagement strategies. You should have the ability to adjust strategies and priorities in response to organizational growth and needs, as well as the demands of the evolving market. HarvestPlus seeks a highly-motivated Head of Fundraising and Donor Relations to join our External Affairs team. The successful candidate will be an ambitious and entrepreneurial fundraiser wih deep networks and experience generating new revenue from high net worth individuals, foundations, governments and multilateral donor agencies. This position is a three year, fixed term, renewable appointment and is located at HarvestPlus headquarters in Washington, DC.

 

BACKGROUND

HarvestPlus works with partners to tackle hidden hunger on a global scale by breeding vitamins and minerals into everyday food crops. With operations in more than thirty countries, HarvestPlus is bridging the gap between agriculture and nutrition and improving the health and livelihoods of millions of people. Our goal is to reach 20 million farming households by 2020 and one billion consumers by 2030 through the development of inclusive and sustainable markets for biofortified crops.

HarvestPlus is part of the CGIAR Research Program on Agriculture for Nutrition and Health (A4NH). CGIAR is a global agriculture research partnership working towards a food secure future. Its science is carried out by its 15 research centers in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations. The HarvestPlus program launched jointly in 2003 by two of these centers, the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). It now operates under a quasi-independent structure with 160 international staff and an annual budget of $40m.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Specific duties of the Head of Fundraising and Donor Relations include but are not limited to:

 

Fundraising

  • Achieve ambitious and measurable income targets through design, leadership and execution of fundraising strategies, expanding HarvestPlus’ core funding and strategic global and country-led initiatives
  • Cultivate, grow and nourish new donor relationships, with a focus on high net worth individuals and international foundations
  • Create and lead agile, cross-disciplinary and geographically diverse teams through concept formulation and full proposal development
  • Work collaboratively with country managers to secure local funding opportunities (bilaterals, national governments) and to develop innovative funding-focused partnerships

 

Donor Reporting and Management

  • Lead donor reporting requirements, in synch with CFO-led financial reporting, and direct donor-facing communication
  • Refine/oversee internal management systems for donor research, contact databases and progress tracking tools
  • Translate highly technical, multi-sectoral needs into tailored and digestible fundraising concepts (both verbal and written) adapted for constantly-changing audiences
  • Manage a small team of fundraising analysts, with strong potential for future team growth
  • Work closely with Heads of Policy/Advocacy and Communications to align messaging and joint outreach efforts

 

External Relations

  • Represent HarvestPlus in global and national policy fora, donor engagement events and country-level visits
  • Direct concept and creation of compelling and innovative donor-facing materials and outreach mediums

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in senior fundraising positions
  • Demonstrated track record of conceptualizing, managing, and implementing successful multi-million dollar fundraising campaigns
  • Strong network of executive level contacts within agriculture, nutrition, and/or public health-focused private-sector, donor and advocacy organizations
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal (i.e. public speaking, presentations, correspondence, proposals, and reports)
  • Comfort communicating complex research, development, and policy concepts
  • Ability and willingness to travel (up to 25%), including internationally Ability to adapt and work within a multicultural, multilingual, multidisciplinary environment across multiple time zones

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree
  • Six or more years of management experience
  • Knowledge of issues related to global health and developing countries and a high level of interest and/or experience in the nexus of nutrition and agriculture
  • Experience building complex, project-based budgets and work plans
  • Familiarity with creating impact investing and inclusive business strategies, especially in relation to agriculture and/or health

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Corporate Sales and Partner Relations

  • Successfully meet revenue and internship seat goals by generating a scalable corporate partner pipeline and developing a sales strategy that will secure internships in volume

  • Work with curriculum development, program staff, and internship partners to collect requirements and feedback to support the identification of courses that will ensure participants are well-prepared for success in the workplace and in pursuit of higher education goals both as Year Up interns and alumni
  • Coordinate with accounts to strategically match students, train managers, conduct site visits and execute corporate partner panels.

  • Ensure that a high support, high expectation, high service model is integrated into an entrepreneurial start-up environment
  • In a collaborative environment, provide coaching and support to team members to ensure internship seat and revenue goals are met

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 10-15 years’ years of professional experience preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in consultative solution sales strongly preferred; all, or the majority, should be in the local region
  • Experience working with C-Suite clients
  • Background/experience selling staffing, recruiting or other human capital related services
  • In depth knowledge of the local corporate landscape and employment trends
  • Ability to leverage existing relationships in the local business community and demonstrated ability in navigating complex organizations

SLAM! Program Los Angeles, a project of Community Partners, is a nonprofit, school-based program whose mission is to provide students from underserved schools with accessible, contemporary and tuition-free music instruction.  Our program is delivered through a network of volunteer college students, creating opportunities for mentorship and professional development through a shared experience of music. Our program offers a variety of classes at each partnering school, including Piano, Guitar, Percussion, Voice, Music Production, Songwriting, and Rock Band.

Starting out as a small pilot program in 2011, SLAM! has since grown into an expansive network that serves more than four hundred students across eleven Los Angeles middle and high schools, supported by one hundred volunteer instructors matriculating at the University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California, and Musicians Institute in Hollywood. In March of 2013, SLAM! became a fiscally sponsored project of Community Partners in order to support growing demand for SLAM! programming at additional schools. SLAM!’s Advisory Board recently completed a formal strategic plan which will guide the organization’s strategic priorities and financial growth from an operating budget of $170,000 to a projected $300,000 budget in the coming three years.

 

Executive Director Job Description 

The Executive Director of SLAM! Program Los Angeles is responsible for partnering with the Advisory Board to develop and implement the overall vision and strategic objectives for the organization. The individual will report directly to the Advisory Board, currently comprised of 9 members, and supervise 3 full-time and part-time staff members who oversee the delivery of our program model at each of our university chapters and middle and high school partners.

 

SLAM! offers a unique opportunity for an entrepreneurial, high-energy, and self-directed leader to build the foundation for growing our movement. The ideal candidate for this role is a passionate, committed organizer who can drive the impact of a lean and high-performing start-up organization. S/he will bring experience managing a team, executing against an agreed upon strategic direction, and familiarity with the broad education landscape in Los Angeles. The Executive Director’s responsibilities include: Fundraising and Development, Program Operations and Management, Board Governance and Strategic Vision, and Marketing and Community Relations.

 

Fundraising and Development (40%)

  • Provide organizational leadership in all aspects of fundraising and development, establishing personal relationships with key funders and donors in order to facilitate the creation of new and renewed sources of major gifts and philanthropic support
  • Work closely with the Advisory Board to develop annual fundraising plans and resources, consistently meeting or exceeding established goals
  • Work with relevant staff members to prepare grant proposals and reports, identify new grantmaker prospects, and meet all grant compliance requirements
  • Develop a robust individual giving program to cultivate existing donors for ongoing support and seek new and diverse donor prospects
  • Identify and maintain strong relationships with key community partners to diversify and expand the organization’s donor base

 

Program Operations and Management (25%)

  • Communicate and collaborate consistently with Community Partners, SLAM!’s fiscal sponsor, regarding all financial management, human resources, and legal counsel needs
  • Provide guidance, coaching, and supervision to the staff team in the high quality implementation of the SLAM! program model at all university chapters and partner schools
  • Oversee the school outreach and intake process as a liaison and ex-officio member of the Advisory Board in alignment with the organization’s projected growth
  • Execute a rigorous, timely, and professional hiring process for any available staff positions
  • Orchestrate the purchase, storage, and upkeep of a comprehensive equipment and supplies inventory across all SLAM! partner sites and central storage facilities
  • Encourage staff satisfaction and retention by fostering meaningful opportunities for their professional development and growth
  • Review position descriptions, ensuring they are up-to-date and that compensation is current with industry standards, and complete annual professional performance reviews
  • Appropriately address job performance issues in a timely and direct manner
  • Supervise financial activities in consultation with Community Partners’ Finance team to ensure that all revenues, obligations, reports, and filings are collected, paid and submitted

 

 

Board Governance and Strategic Vision (20%)

  • Provide visionary and inspirational leadership to all board members, staff, and volunteers, helping to build an innovative, entrepreneurial and nimble organization that is responsive to the needs of volunteers, school partners, and broader community
  • Establish strong working relationships with board members during and outside of board meetings, encouraging all members to participate actively and facilitating their involvement beyond board meetings
  • Provide the board with appropriate materials prior to each meeting and inform board members of any critical issues that need to be addressed
  • Oversee the annual preparation and monitoring of the budget in consultation with the board
  • Identify new board members whose talents, background, interests, experience, and commitment will further the mission and expand support

 

Marketing and Community Relations (15%)

  • Create and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan including: brand consistency, social media engagement, online communications, and related activities
  • Provide leadership and guidance to staff members and board members responsible for supporting marketing and communication efforts
  • Develop and distribute consistent digital communications to all organization stakeholders
  • Actively participate in the Los Angeles arts and education communities, attending conferences, receptions, workshops, and events to boost the organization’s visibility
  • Increase widespread knowledge of SLAM!, ensuring that the public as well as current or potential partners and funders understand its value and potential

 

Qualifications

 

Qualified applicants will have:

  • A deep passion for arts education, youth mentorship, and leadership development
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a leadership role within an organization
  • Demonstrated track record of fundraising or business development through corporate and private foundations, event planning, and individual giving
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire, empower, and uplift others in a professional setting
  • Expertise in planning, organizational development, and team or culture building
  • Ability to balance day-to-day demands with big-picture vision and strategy
  • Familiarity with the Los Angeles school system and education policies specific to after school program providers
  • A broad network of contacts and potential partners eager to move the mission forward
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and interest in social entrepreneurship
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to balance multiple priorities
  • Excellent organizational skills, strategic thinking, and problem solving orientation
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, with individuals across a variety of developmental and professional stages
  • Strong technological fluency (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps for Nonprofits, Mailchimp, WordPress, and database management, etc.)
  • The ability and flexibility to travel to partner schools across Los Angeles and work remotely with consistent access to:
